The new customer portal is fabulous!
However, could you integrate a message options or contact option that allows the guest to send a message directly us.

This will allow them, whilst in the customer portal, to open a chat-room-type space to contact the company directly?

The Customer Portal allows code injection which means you can work with platforms like Freshchat or Tawk.to and insert their chat widget in the Customer Portal.
